Plot Summary
"Dancing is like dreaming with your feet!" -Constanze Mozart Director Stephane Gauger's sophomore feature film, SAIGON ELECTRIC, tells the story of modern day Vietnamese youth. Mai, a young woman from the countryside, arrives in the hustle and bustle of Saigon. She is a ribbon dancer, in hopes of entering a prestigious dance academy. She soon meets Kim, a street smart hip hop dancer, who is part of a dance crew called Saigon Fresh, with a dream of competing at an international break dancing competition. Kim and Mai become fast friends but soon divert on their own personal journeys -- for the country girl, settling into a new environment, making friends and gaining her own self-confidence. For the streetwise girl, an opportunity at love and a way out of poverty. But when a hotel developer slates the community center they call home for demolition, the dance crew's dreams are put in jeopardy and the crew find themselves dancing for something greater. This is not your typical dance film! Subtle, and at times quiet (even with the buzzing street noises of thousands of motorbikes in Saigon), what is inspiring about the story is the longing and hopefulness that each of the main characters express in their individual pursuits (A signature trait from the director of the equally feel good OWL AND THE SPARROW). It is a feel good movie that despite its conventional conflict is still fresh and emotionally evocative.
